27-Year-Old Sentenced to 12 Years Imprisonment for Child Trafficking in Ogun

An Ogun State high court has sentenced a 27-year-old man, Chukwuemeka Iheamama, to 12 years' imprisonment following his conviction for child trafficking and the exploitation of minors.

The prosecution successfully proved that Iheamama orchestrated the recruitment, transportation, and illegal exploitation of two 15-year-old minors, identified as Bright Edim and Mary Ekong.

The case built against the convict relied on tight evidence showing an intentional breach of child safety laws and anti-trafficking regulations:

  • Targeted Exploitation: Iheamama brought the victims into Ogun State under false pretenses, later placing them in environments where they were subjected to forced labor and financial exploitation.
  • The Verdict: Presiding over the case, the court ruled that the defense failed to counter the overwhelming evidence presented by law enforcement and anti-trafficking agencies. The judge subsequently handed down the 12-year custodial sentence without an option of a fine.

Anti-trafficking officials and judicial stakeholders noted that this ruling sends a strong message to local and cross-border syndicates operating within the region. The state ministry of justice and law enforcement agencies reiterated their commitment to maintaining a zero-tolerance policy against child labor, modern-day slavery, and the illegal movement of vulnerable minors across state lines.
