2027: Peter Obi is a Trader, Can’t Be President — Oshiomhole
Oshiomhole said Peter Obi’s trading background and political decisions make him unfit to become Nigeria’s president.
Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has dismissed the presidential ambition of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Peter Obi, insisting that the former Anambra State governor lacks the qualities required to lead Nigeria.
Speaking during an interview on TVC on Monday, the former Edo State governor described Obi as a trader with a short-term approach to decision-making, arguing that such a mindset was unsuitable for managing a complex economy like Nigeria’s.
According to Oshiomhole, traders are driven by quick returns rather than long-term planning, which he said is essential for national development.
“Peter Obi is a trader. Traders have short-term calculations. They are not into long-term projections. Their turnover is within three months, maximum of six months,” he said.
The All Progressives Congress chieftain also questioned Obi’s political consistency, recalling that while serving as governor of Anambra State, Obi pledged to remain in the All Progressives Grand Alliance in honour of the late Biafran leader, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.
He alleged that Obi abandoned the party shortly after completing his tenure and later became the running mate to former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.
Oshiomhole argued that Obi’s political decisions reflected inconsistency, adding that the former governor had become what he described as “a political wanderer.”
The senator further criticised Obi’s business background, claiming it influenced his understanding of economic development.
He maintained that genuine industrial growth requires long-term investment, unlike trading, which focuses on quick financial returns.
According to him, manufacturers and entrepreneurs understand the commitment needed to establish factories, procure equipment and sustain production over several years.
He accused Obi of encouraging import-dependent commerce instead of promoting domestic production and employment.
“Nigeria was virtually grounded. Peter Obi is not aware because he’s busy trading. Peter Obi’s business is to export jobs and import unemployment into the country. That is what he lives for. He’s a trader. He owns a shopping mall,” Oshiomhole stated.
The remarks come as political parties continue preparations for the 2027 general election, with major contenders already positioning themselves ahead of the campaign season.
Obi has yet to respond publicly to Oshiomhole’s comments.
