2027: ‘We’ll Rig Those Who Rig Elections’ — Peter Obi
Peter Obi says election riggers will face prosecution under his administration if elected president in 2027, pledging tougher enforcement of electoral laws.
Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), has vowed to ensure that individuals involved in electoral fraud face legal consequences if he wins the 2027 presidential election.
Obi made the statement on Wednesday, October 28, during a town hall meeting organised by the NDC in Akwanga, Nasarawa State, where he addressed supporters on electoral integrity and the need to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
Responding to a question about how his party would tackle attempts to manipulate the next general election, the former Anambra State governor said his camp would resist electoral malpractice.
“You didn’t ask about what we are going to do if people rig election next year. Let me assure you, number one, this coming election, we will rig those who rig it,” Obi said.
He subsequently explained that, if elected president, he would work to prevent election rigging by strengthening political parties and improving the electoral process.
The NDC candidate said his proposed approach would place greater emphasis on accountability and the enforcement of existing laws, regardless of the status of those involved.
Obi also called for stricter enforcement of educational qualifications for candidates seeking elective offices. He argued that aspirants should be required to demonstrate that they attended primary and secondary school, warning that individuals who forged certificates or falsely claimed qualifications should face prosecution.
He extended the warning to officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission and other individuals involved in election administration, saying anyone found guilty of electoral fraud under his administration would face the law.
The remarks come as political parties and prospective candidates begin preparations for the 2027 general election, with electoral credibility, voter participation and the independence of election management institutions expected to remain major issues.
Obi’s comments were framed around his pledge to strengthen democratic institutions and ensure that electoral rules apply equally to public officials and ordinary citizens.
His use of the phrase “rig those who rig it” was presented as a warning against electoral offenders, rather than an endorsement of manipulating election results.
The effectiveness of any proposed measures would depend on applicable laws, institutional independence and due process.
