2027: Greed Scattered Coalition — Solomon Dalung Laments
Solomon Dalung says greed and personal ambition have fractured Nigeria’s opposition coalition, warning that regional politics and political fragmentation could create confusion ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Former Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Solomon Dalung, has lamented that the coalition that would have salvaged Nigeria in the 2027 general elections has been overtaken by greed.
Dalung made the remark on Friday during an interview on the Morning Show of ARISE News, where he expressed disappointment over the fragmentation of opposition forces ahead of the next general election.
According to him, the expectations of many Nigerians were cut short by the division among opposition leaders, who he said have become more focused on personal ambitions than on building a united political front.
“Greed has taken over. You can see the manifestation of individual ambition and interest, and the list of presidential candidates seems to be endless,” he said.
Dalung argued that opposition political elites are more interested in their personal quest for power, a development he said has contributed to their movement across different political parties and weakened efforts to build a strong coalition.
He further stated that Nigeria appears to be returning to the style of politics witnessed during the First Republic, when political parties were largely aligned along regional interests. According to him, the growing number of presidential candidates from different regions suggests that the 2027 election may increasingly be shaped by regional considerations.
The former minister warned that the trend could result in political confusion as the election approaches, with candidates focusing primarily on securing votes from their respective regions rather than presenting national agendas capable of uniting the country.
He maintained that the inability of opposition leaders to put collective interests above personal ambitions has significantly undermined the possibility of forming a formidable coalition ahead of the 2027 polls.
Dalung’s comments come amid ongoing political realignments and consultations among opposition figures as preparations for the next general election gather momentum.
