2027: Nwifuru Threatens To Sack Chairmen Who Lose LGAs To Opposition

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has warned local government area chairmen that they could be removed from office if opposition parties defeat the All Progressives Congress in their respective councils during the 2027 elections.

Nwifuru issued the warning while addressing the council chairmen during a meeting in Abakaliki, the state capital.

The governor urged the chairmen to work harder to ensure the APC maintains its dominance across the state, stressing that political leaders at the grassroots had an important role to play in securing electoral victories for the party.

He told the council chairmen that they would be held responsible for the political performance of their respective local government areas during the 2027 elections.

Nwifuru reportedly made it clear that any chairman whose local government was won by an opposition party should not expect to remain in office.

The governor’s directive reflects the increasing political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections, with political parties already strengthening their structures at the grassroots.

Nwifuru has repeatedly urged APC members in Ebonyi to remain united and work together to consolidate the party’s control of the state.

He also challenged the council chairmen to demonstrate stronger commitment to the party and ensure that government programmes and policies were effectively communicated to residents in their areas.

The warning places additional political responsibility on the elected council officials, who are expected to mobilise voters and strengthen the APC’s grassroots structures ahead of the elections.

The governor’s position also highlights the significance of local government areas in Ebonyi’s electoral calculations, particularly as political parties prepare for the presidential, National Assembly, governorship and state assembly elections scheduled for 2027.

The opposition parties are expected to intensify their campaigns across the state as the election approaches, potentially creating stronger competition for the APC in areas where the ruling party has traditionally maintained an advantage.

Nwifuru, however, maintained that the APC must not become complacent and called on party members to remain focused on retaining political control.
