2027: Babachir Lawal Vows to Block Atiku’s Presidential Ambition After Quitting ADC
Former SGF Babachir Lawal says he will work with allies to stop Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ambition, following his resignation from the ADC over alleged irregularities in the party’s primary.
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has declared that he will work with political associates and like-minded individuals to prevent the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, from emerging as Nigeria’s next president.
Lawal made the declaration on Monday shortly after announcing his resignation from the ADC, citing alleged irregularities in the party’s recently concluded presidential primary election.
The former SGF accused the party leadership of manipulating the primary process in favour of Atiku, who emerged as the ADC presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general election.
In a strongly worded statement, Lawal maintained that the primary election lacked credibility and transparency, insisting that the outcome did not reflect the genuine wishes of party members.
According to him, his decision to leave the party was informed by what he described as widespread vote manipulation and result alterations during the exercise.
Lawal said he would now redirect his political efforts toward preventing Atiku from occupying the nation’s highest office.
“I will be tweaking my plans for the future and consulting with like-minded colleagues on how to stop this incompetent octogenarian from coming close to the presidential office,” he stated.
The former SGF further alleged that the ADC primary process was rigged to favour Atiku and accused some party officials of undermining internal democracy.
He also claimed that the former vice president and his supporters would face stiff political opposition ahead of the next presidential election.
Lawal added that he intends to temporarily withdraw from active political engagements while reassessing his next political move.
“I will, in the meantime, retire to my village farm, from where I will be watching Kachalla Atiku and his band of wicked vote riggers and result manipulators mercilessly out-rigged and beaten to pulp by Tinubu’s ruthless and superior rigging machine,” he said.
The latest comments are expected to further deepen divisions within the opposition camp as preparations gradually begin for the 2027 presidential election.
Lawal’s resignation comes amid growing controversy surrounding the ADC primary, which has attracted criticism from some party members and aspirants over allegations of irregularities, claims that supporters of Atiku have continued to reject.
