2027: Atiku Gets Sokoto ADC Nod for Presidential Race
African Democratic Congress stakeholders in Sokoto State have reportedly endorsed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the 2027 presidential race, describing the move as a consensus choice ahead of party primaries.
The Sokoto State chapter of the African Democratic Congress has adopted former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as its preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The endorsement was announced on Sunday during a press briefing held in Sokoto State by party stakeholders and loyalists of the ADC.
According to a party chieftain, Muktar Magori, the decision was reached after extensive consultations among stakeholders, who agreed to back Atiku as a consensus choice ahead of the party’s national primaries.
Magori, a former Chief of Staff to ex-Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, said the endorsement reflected the collective political direction of the party in the state.
He explained that the move was part of early preparations for the ADC’s internal primaries and the broader 2027 electoral contest, stressing that party unity was central to the decision.
“This decision is in preparation for the party’s forthcoming presidential primaries and the 2027 general elections,” he stated during the briefing.
The press conference was attended by several notable ADC stakeholders in Sokoto State, including former Commissioner for Information Dahiru Maishanu, former Head of Service Abubakar Muhammad, and the State Chairman of the party, Abdullahi Maigwandu, among others.
Political observers say the endorsement signals growing internal alignment within the ADC in Sokoto State as parties intensify preparations for the 2027 elections.
Atiku, who previously served as Vice President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007, remains a key opposition figure and has contested multiple presidential elections under different political platforms.
The development is expected to influence early political negotiations within the opposition landscape, particularly as parties seek strong candidates capable of challenging the ruling establishment.
Analysts note that the Sokoto endorsement may not automatically determine the national ADC position but reflects regional political strategy and stakeholder consolidation ahead of party conventions.
The ADC is expected to conduct its formal primaries in the coming months as political realignments continue to shape the 2027 election race across Nigeria.
