2027: ACF Knocks Peter Obi’s One-Term Promise, Tinubu’s ‘Shambolic’ Performance

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has criticised the one-term presidential pledge by the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Peter Obi, describing the promise as unnecessary, undemocratic and contrary to the spirit of constitutional democracy.

The forum also delivered a harsh assessment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, describing its performance after three years in office as “shambolic,” particularly in the areas of security and economic management.

Speaking in an interview, ACF National Secretary, Tukur Baba, argued that Obi’s commitment to serve only one four-year term and subsequently return power to the North was misplaced and should not form part of democratic governance.

Obi had recently stated that he would serve only one term if elected president in 2027, insisting that four years would be enough for a sincere and committed leader to transform the country.

Reacting to the declaration, Baba said power rotation was not a constitutional requirement and warned against institutionalising regional considerations in the democratic process.

“Such a promise is totally unnecessary. Power shift is not a constitutional provision; it is a political arrangement decided by parties. Democracy should not be burdened with artificial restrictions,” he said.

According to him, governance should be driven by competence, accountability and performance rather than regional calculations.

He argued that if a leader performs exceptionally well in office, it would be unfair to deny citizens the opportunity to re-elect such a person simply because of a prior political promise.

“Imagine if Peter Obi succeeds in tackling insecurity, banditry and terrorism within a few years. Why should Nigerians be denied the right to decide whether he deserves another term?” Baba asked.

The ACF official stressed that the forum has no preferred presidential candidate and does not endorse political parties, noting that its primary concern remains good governance, security and economic stability.

On the performance of President Tinubu’s administration, Baba expressed disappointment, saying insecurity, kidnappings and terrorist activities have continued to spread despite efforts by the government.

He also criticised the economic situation, citing rising prices, taxation, declining purchasing power and growing hardship among citizens.

“The middle class has been wiped out. The policies of this administration have impacted Nigerians negatively. Generally, I will say the performance has been shambolic,” he stated.

Baba further questioned the effectiveness of ongoing infrastructure projects and security reforms, insisting that many Nigerians are yet to feel the benefits of government policies.

He maintained that the North’s primary interest ahead of the 2027 elections remains the emergence of a government capable of delivering security, economic growth and improved welfare for citizens across the country.
