2026 World Cup: Yamal Snubs Messi, Names Ronaldo Player With ‘Aura’
Spain winger Lamine Yamal described Cristiano Ronaldo as football’s ultimate example of “aura,” overlooking Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane.
Spain winger Lamine Yamal has described Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo as the footballer who best represents “aura,” overlooking several of the game’s biggest stars, including Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane.
Yamal made the remarks while speaking ahead of Spain’s 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final clash against Belgium.
The Barcelona teenager was asked to explain what “aura” means in football and did not hesitate to single out the Portuguese legend.
“What is aura? In football, Cristiano Ronaldo,” Yamal said.
According to the Spain international, aura is more than footballing ability, describing it as a unique presence that commands attention whenever a person enters a room or steps onto the pitch.
“Aura is a person who gives off something like when they arrive, it’s like… WOW. For example, Brad Pitt or like that,” he explained.
“In football, Cristiano would be a good example of aura.”
Yamal’s comments have attracted attention because he overlooked several contemporary stars, including Argentina captain Lionel Messi, France’s Kylian Mbappe and England skipper Harry Kane.
Ronaldo, regarded as one of football’s greatest players, has built a reputation over two decades through his performances for club and country, winning multiple league titles, UEFA Champions League trophies and individual honours.
The 41-year-old also remains one of the sport’s most recognisable personalities, with his leadership, confidence and longevity continuing to earn admiration from players across generations.
Yamal, meanwhile, has emerged as one of Spain’s brightest young talents and has played a key role in his country’s run to the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup.
Spain will face Belgium in a highly anticipated last-eight encounter as they seek to extend their unbeaten run in the competition and book a place in the semi-finals.
The teenager’s praise for Ronaldo comes amid continued debate among football fans over the greatest players of all time, with the Portuguese captain and Messi widely regarded as two of the sport’s defining figures.
