2026 World Cup: I’ll Continue to Pick Ronaldo After Tournament — New Portugal Coach, Jesus
Portugal coach Jorge Jesus said Cristiano Ronaldo will continue to earn national team call-ups if fit, dismissing suggestions the veteran has become a burden.
Newly appointed Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has declared that Cristiano Ronaldo will continue to be selected for the national team as long as he remains fit and available for international duty.
Jesus made the remarks during his official unveiling on Friday, days after Portugal’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ronaldo came under criticism during the tournament, with some observers claiming the 41-year-old forward had become a liability as Portugal crashed out in the Round of 16 following defeat to Spain.
After the match, Ronaldo revealed that the 2026 edition would be his final FIFA World Cup, although he stopped short of announcing his retirement from international football.
Addressing questions about the veteran captain’s future, Jesus insisted Ronaldo’s experience and commitment remain valuable to the national team.
“As long as he’s playing and is in a condition to be selected, I will pick him, within certain limits and under the conditions that I consider best for the national team,” Jesus said.
The former Al Hilal and Benfica manager disclosed that he had not yet spoken directly with Ronaldo since taking charge but dismissed suggestions that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner could become a problem for the squad.
“I haven’t spoken with Cris yet… Cris is never going to be a problem for the national team. Not for the national team, nor for me,” he added.
Jesus now faces the task of rebuilding Portugal following their disappointing World Cup campaign while balancing the integration of younger talents with the continued presence of experienced players.
Ronaldo remains Portugal’s all-time leading scorer and most-capped player, having enjoyed an international career spanning more than two decades.
Despite questions over his future, the veteran forward has repeatedly expressed his desire to continue contributing to the national team whenever called upon.
Jesus’ comments provide the clearest indication yet that Ronaldo remains part of Portugal’s plans beyond the World Cup, with the new coach making it clear that selection will continue to depend on the veteran’s fitness, form and the needs of the team rather than his age or recent criticism.
