2026 World Cup: Senegal Battle AFCON Winners’ Curse After Norway Defeat
Senegal’s 3-2 loss to Norway has intensified fears of the AFCON winners’ curse, leaving the Teranga Lions fighting to avoid an early exit from the 2026 World Cup.
Senegal’s hopes of progressing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup suffered a major setback following their 3-2 defeat to Norway, with concerns growing that the Teranga Lions may be falling victim to the long-standing “AFCON winners’ curse.”
The West Africans are now on the brink of elimination after losing their second group match, leaving qualification for the knockout stage hanging in the balance.
Senegal entered the tournament as reigning African champions after winning the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations against hosts Morocco.
However, their continental triumph was later overshadowed by controversy after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) stripped them of the title. The matter is currently before the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Despite their status as one of Africa’s strongest teams, history suggests that AFCON champions often struggle to replicate their continental success at the World Cup.
Over the years, many African champions have either failed to qualify for the World Cup or crashed out in the group stage shortly after lifting the AFCON trophy.
Only a handful of reigning African champions have managed to advance beyond the group phase of the World Cup.
Nigeria achieved the feat in 1994 and again in 2014, while Senegal also progressed from the group stage in 2022 as continental champions.
Cameroon, who won the 1988 AFCON, reached the World Cup quarter-finals in 1990. However, by that time they were no longer African champions, having lost their continental crown to Algeria.
The trend has fueled discussions about the difficulty African champions face in maintaining momentum on the global stage.
Senegal’s defeat to Norway has further strengthened those concerns, with the Teranga Lions now facing a must-win situation in their final group fixture.
The team remains mathematically capable of reaching the Round of 32 because the expanded World Cup format allows the eight best third-placed teams to qualify for the knockout rounds.
To keep their hopes alive, Senegal must secure victory against Iraq in their final group match and hope other results work in their favour.
Failure to progress would see the African giants join the list of reigning AFCON champions who struggled to make an impact at the World Cup, reinforcing a pattern that has persisted for decades.
The decisive clash against Iraq will determine whether Senegal can break the trend or become its latest victim.
