YPP Urges INEC to Extend Voter Registration

The Young Progressive Party has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to extend the Continuous Voter Registration exercise to allow more eligible Nigerians to register ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party made the call in a statement jointly signed by the YPP FCT Chairman, Abraham Adedotun, and the party’s FCT senatorial candidate, Blessing Benyeogor.

The YPP expressed concern that the closure of the registration exercise could disenfranchise eligible Nigerians, particularly young people who had yet to complete the registration process.

It urged INEC to consider the concerns raised by political actors and civil society organisations and provide another opportunity for citizens who were unable to register or complete the process.

The party said extending the exercise would promote wider participation in the electoral process and strengthen public confidence in the 2027 elections.

“As preparations for the 2027 elections continue, it is important that no eligible Nigerian is left out of the electoral process,” the party said.

The YPP also urged INEC to maintain its impartiality and take measures to strengthen confidence in the electoral system.

INEC had closed the 2025–2026 Continuous Voter Registration exercise on July 26, after previously extending the deadline. The commission subsequently ruled out another extension, citing the need to maintain its preparations for the 2027 elections.

The YPP, however, urged the electoral commission to reconsider its position and create another opportunity for eligible Nigerians who were unable to register.

The party maintained that a broader voter register would encourage participation and ensure that eligible citizens were not excluded from choosing their representatives in the 2027 elections.
