World Cup: ‘They’ve Not Contributed Any’ — Bruno Hits Ronaldo’s Critics
Former Portugal international Bruno Alves has defended Cristiano Ronaldo against criticism, saying only those who have achieved more in football should question the Al-Nassr forward’s impact and legacy.
Former Portugal defender Bruno Alves has come to the defence of Cristiano Ronaldo, insisting that the veteran forward remains a football icon whose influence cannot be measured by criticism.
Alves said Ronaldo’s legacy transcends time and argued that some of the people attacking the five-time Ballon d’Or winner have not made significant contributions to the sport.
In a message shared on his Instagram page, the former Portugal international stated that criticism of Ronaldo should come only from individuals who have achieved greater heights in football.
“Respect, idols are timeless! Many individuals discuss football without having made any contributions to the sport. Criticism should come only from those who achieve more! Cristiano, we believe in you regardless of the situation,” Alves said, as reported by Goal.
The comments followed growing criticism of Ronaldo after Portugal’s disappointing performance in their 2026 FIFA World Cup match against the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Ronaldo failed to score in the encounter and did not register a single shot on target as Portugal were held to a 1-1 draw.
The result sparked debate among fans and football analysts, with some questioning whether the 41-year-old forward’s continued presence in the national team was affecting Portugal’s progress at the tournament.
However, Alves maintained that Ronaldo still deserves respect due to his achievements and long-standing contribution to football.
Ronaldo has repeatedly faced criticism throughout his career but has often responded with impressive performances at crucial moments.
The Portugal captain will now look to silence his doubters when his team faces Uzbekistan in their final Group K fixture on Tuesday, June 23.
The match will take place at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, with Portugal seeking a positive result as they push for qualification to the knockout stages.
Despite his recent struggles, Ronaldo remains one of the most decorated players in football history, having enjoyed a remarkable career with clubs including Real Madrid, Manchester United and Juventus, while also becoming Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer.
Alves believes the veteran striker’s achievements have earned him lasting respect regardless of temporary setbacks on the pitch.
