World Cup: Historic Japan Win Sends Tunisia Crashing Out

Japan recorded a historic victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Tunisia in a record-breaking encounter that saw the Asian side secure qualification while eliminating the North Africans from the competition.

The match, played in Monterrey, marked the 1,000th fixture in FIFA World Cup history, and Japan celebrated the milestone with an impressive attacking display.

Keito Nakamura played a key role in Japan’s opening goal, producing a brilliant run into the box before delivering a low cross across the face of goal, where Daichi Kamada finished confidently through a crowd of players.

The goal was Kamada’s second of the tournament and became Japan’s fastest-ever goal scored at a World Cup.

Japan doubled their advantage on the half-hour mark when Ayase Ueda found space outside the box and fired a powerful strike into the net, leaving Tunisia’s defence unable to respond.

Tunisia, who had appointed Herve Renard as their new head coach earlier in the week, struggled to mount a comeback against a disciplined Japanese side.

Japan continued to dominate after the break and added a third goal midway through the second half. Ueda turned provider by setting up Junya Ito, who calmly finished to extend the lead.

Ueda completed the emphatic victory late in the match by scoring his second goal of the game, sealing a comfortable win for Japan.

The result represents Japan’s biggest World Cup victory and moves them level with the Netherlands at the top of Group F.

For Tunisia, the defeat confirmed their elimination from the tournament after a disappointing campaign.

The North African side failed to win any of their matches, scoring just one goal while conceding eight throughout the group stage.

Japan’s impressive performance further strengthens their reputation as one of the tournament’s most organised teams, with their attacking efficiency and defensive discipline making them serious contenders to progress deep into the competition.

Meanwhile, Tunisia will now play their final group match as a formality, having already been knocked out of the World Cup.
