World Cup 2026: Queiroz Refuses to Decide Future After Ghana’s Elimination
Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz says he will delay any decision on his future after the Black Stars’ 1-0 World Cup defeat to Colombia.
Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has declined to discuss his future following the Black Stars’ exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying he will take time before making any decision.
Ghana’s campaign came to an end on Saturday after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia in their Round of 32 encounter at the Kansas City Stadium.
Jhon Arias scored the only goal of the match in the 14th minute, handing Colombia a place in the Round of 16 while condemning the Black Stars to elimination.
Despite enjoying spells of possession, Ghana struggled to create meaningful opportunities in attack and failed to register a single shot on target throughout the contest.
The disappointing performance marked the end of a brief World Cup campaign for the four-time African champions, who had hoped to progress beyond the knockout stage.
Queiroz, who was appointed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) in March on a short-term contract, refused to be drawn into speculation about whether he would remain in charge of the national team.
The 73-year-old Portuguese tactician was brought in following the dismissal of Otto Addo, with the mandate of leading Ghana at the World Cup.
Speaking after the defeat, Queiroz said his immediate focus was on recovering from the emotionally draining match before considering what comes next.
“Next for me, it’s to have a glass of water, relax after this game, refresh for the next morning, and start making other decisions,” he told Sporty TV.
The experienced coach, who has previously managed national teams including Portugal, Iran, Egypt and Qatar, did not indicate whether he would be interested in extending his stay with the Black Stars.
His future is expected to be discussed by the Ghana Football Association in the coming weeks as the country begins preparations for future international competitions.
Ghana’s elimination means another early exit for the West African nation, whose hopes of making a deep run at the tournament were cut short by an organised Colombian side.
The Black Stars now join several other African teams already knocked out of the competition, leaving only a handful of the continent’s representatives still battling for the World Cup title.
Attention will now shift to whether the GFA retains Queiroz or begins the search for another coach ahead of upcoming international assignments.
