World Cup 2026: Put Messi’s Name in Dictionary, Records Chase Him — Thierry Henry
Thierry Henry has praised Lionel Messi after another record-breaking performance at the World Cup, saying the Argentina captain does not chase records because they naturally follow him.
Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has described Lionel Messi as a footballer beyond comparison, saying the Argentina captain’s achievements are so extraordinary that his name deserves a place in the dictionary.
Henry made the remarks after Messi scored twice in Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria in their second Group H fixture at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The former France international said Messi is not motivated by chasing personal milestones, insisting that records continue to follow the 39-year-old forward because of his exceptional performances.
“This guy doesn’t chase records, records chase him. They should put his name in the dictionary,” Henry said during a discussion on Fox studio after Argentina’s win.
Messi’s brace against Austria helped the defending champions secure qualification for the knockout stage of the tournament with a match to spare.
The performance also saw the Inter Miami star break four World Cup records, further adding to his already remarkable career achievements.
Among the milestones Messi reached were becoming the player with the most World Cup goals in finals history with 18 goals, the player with the most World Cup appearances with 28 matches, and the player with the most victories in the competition.
He also became the player with the highest number of minutes played at the World Cup, reaching 2,489 minutes.
Henry praised Messi’s approach to the tournament, noting that the Argentine captain appears relaxed and is enjoying his football rather than being weighed down by pressure.
“He always wants more. He is playing the World Cup with joy; he is very relaxed. You see that from his celebrations,” Henry added.
Messi’s continued influence has been a major factor in Argentina’s strong campaign as they attempt to defend the title they won in 2022.
Despite being one of the most experienced players at the tournament, Messi has remained a central figure for the South American side, contributing goals and leadership on the biggest stage.
Argentina will face Jordan in their final group fixture, with Messi expected to lead the team as they prepare for the knockout rounds.
Henry’s comments further underline the global admiration surrounding Messi’s historic career and his latest World Cup achievements.
