World Cup 2026: Egypt Becomes Fourth African Country to Win Match
Egypt became the fourth African nation to win a match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating New Zealand 3-1 in their Group G encounter.
Egypt have become the latest African team to record a victory at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup after securing a comeback win over New Zealand in their second Group G fixture.
The Pharaohs recovered from an early setback to defeat New Zealand 3-1 in a thrilling encounter played at BC Place in Vancouver on Monday morning.
Mostafa Ziko, Mohamed Salah and Trezeguet scored for Egypt as the North African side secured their first win of the tournament and boosted their chances of progressing from the group stage.
New Zealand had taken the lead early in the match, but Egypt responded strongly, using their experience and attacking quality to turn the game around and claim all three points.
The victory made Egypt the fourth African country to win a match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Before their triumph over New Zealand, Egypt had opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Belgium, leaving them unbeaten after two group matches.
The North Africans now join Ivory Coast, Ghana and Morocco among African nations that have recorded victories at this year’s tournament.
Ivory Coast became the first African country to secure a win at the competition after defeating Ecuador 1-0 in their opening match.
Ghana followed by recording a 1-0 victory over Panama in their first Group L fixture, becoming the second African team to pick up three points at the World Cup.
Morocco later joined the list after defeating Scotland 1-0 in their second Group C match.
However, several African representatives are still searching for their first victories in the tournament. Senegal, Cape Verde, Democratic Republic of Congo, Algeria, South Africa and Tunisia are yet to secure wins.
Egypt’s latest result will increase optimism among African football supporters, as the continent continues its quest for improved performances at the global stage.
The Pharaohs, led by captain Mohamed Salah, are aiming to progress beyond the group phase and make a deeper run in the tournament.
With one win and one draw from their opening two matches, Egypt will now focus on their remaining group fixture as they seek qualification to the knockout rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
