Wike Defends Tinubu's Reforms, Dismisses Obi, Atiku Ahead of 2027

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has defended the economic reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu, insisting that the administration inherited a severely weakened economy that could not be repaired overnight. He also dismissed the presidential ambitions of opposition figures Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, saying neither had presented a convincing alternative ahead of the 2027 general election.

Speaking during his monthly media chat in Abuja, Wike acknowledged that the administration's policies had caused hardship but argued that the reforms were necessary to reverse years of economic decline. He described the removal of fuel subsidy as a bold decision that previous governments had failed to implement despite recognising its economic burden. According to him, the policy has increased revenue available to state governments for salaries, pensions and infrastructure development.

The former Rivers State governor urged Nigerians to be patient, maintaining that rebuilding an economy weakened over many years would take time. He said no administration could solve every challenge within a few years but insisted that the Tinubu government had shown the political courage required to implement difficult but necessary reforms.

Turning to the 2027 presidential race, Wike criticised Peter Obi, accusing the former Anambra State governor of relying on emotional appeal rather than demonstrable leadership. He also dismissed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar's chances, suggesting that past assessments by Atiku's political associates should be enough for Nigerians to judge his suitability for office.

Wike maintained that despite the current economic challenges, the Tinubu administration has recorded measurable progress within three years in office. He urged Nigerians to allow the President to complete his reform agenda, insisting that the long-term benefits would outweigh the temporary difficulties currently being experienced.
