Veteran Journalist and Ibadan Chief Lekan Alabi Dies at 76

Veteran journalist, public relations expert and Ibadan chief, Chief Lekan Alabi, has died at the age of 76. Alabi, who held the traditional title of Abese Olubadan of Ibadanland, passed away on Saturday morning in Lagos. His death was announced in a statement issued by Adeola Oloko, the media aide to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja.

The statement described Alabi as a distinguished journalist and former press secretary who served multiple governors of the old Oyo State. It added that he would be buried on Sunday in accordance with Islamic rites.

Throughout a career spanning several decades, Alabi made significant contributions to journalism, public communication and media management. He served as press secretary to four governors of the old Oyo State between 1983 and 1989 and later became the first Cultural Ambassador of the National Museum in Ile-Ife. He was also widely respected as an author, columnist, motivational speaker and public affairs commentator.

Beyond his journalism career, Alabi played an active role in promoting Yoruba culture and the history of Ibadan. His traditional title as Abese Olubadan reflected his longstanding service to the Olubadan chieftaincy institution and the preservation of the city's cultural heritage. He remained an influential voice on historical, cultural and public affairs until his death.

His passing has drawn tributes from journalists, traditional leaders and public officials, many of whom have described him as a committed professional whose contributions to journalism, public service and cultural development left a lasting impact on Oyo State and Nigeria.
