Trump Blames Tuchel Over England’s World Cup Tactics

United States President Donald Trump has criticised England manager Thomas Tuchel over the team's tactical approach in their 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, questioning the decision to adopt a defensive strategy after taking the lead. Trump's remarks add to the growing criticism surrounding England's performance, following their 2-1 loss despite going ahead in the second half.

Speaking after the match, Trump specifically questioned Tuchel's decision to deploy captain Harry Kane in a deeper defensive role late in the game. Referring to Kane as his "golf partner", the US President wondered why one of England's biggest attacking threats was asked to contribute defensively instead of remaining in advanced positions to pressure Argentina.

England had taken the lead before Argentina mounted a comeback, scoring twice to book their place in the World Cup final. Tuchel later defended his tactical decisions, insisting he had no regrets and explaining that the substitutions and defensive changes were made in response to the flow of the match and Argentina's attacking pressure. He acknowledged that England became too passive after scoring but maintained that his decisions were based on experience and the circumstances of the game.

Trump's comments have further fuelled debate over Tuchel's management, with fans and football pundits divided over England's tactical approach. While some believe the German coach became overly cautious after his side went in front, others argue his overall performance at the tournament should not be judged solely on the semi-final defeat. England will now turn their attention to the third-place play-off against France.
