Tinubu Celebrates Oba Of Benin On 10th Coronation Anniversary
President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Oba Ewuare II on his 10th coronation anniversary, praising his cultural preservation and commitment to peace.
President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Ewuare II, on his 10th anniversary on the throne, commending the monarch for preserving the Benin Kingdom’s cultural heritage and promoting peace.
Tinubu also congratulated the traditional ruler on his 73rd birthday, which fell on October 20, 2026.
The President conveyed his congratulations in a statement issued on Tuesday, October 20, on behalf of his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and the Federal Government.
He described Oba Ewuare II as an embodiment of dignity, culture and historical consciousness, noting that the monarch’s reign had strengthened the identity and traditions of the Benin people.
Tinubu said the anniversary represented a significant milestone in the monarch’s leadership, reflecting a decade of royal stewardship, service and dedication to safeguarding the heritage of the ancient kingdom.
He commended the Oba for sustaining the dignity of the traditional institution and inspiring confidence among his subjects.
The President also praised the monarch’s wisdom, courage, restraint and commitment to peace, describing him as a symbol of integrity, a guardian of communal values and a rallying point for the aspirations of his people.
Tinubu further acknowledged Oba Ewuare II’s efforts to facilitate the return of stolen Benin artefacts, describing him as an important custodian of one of Africa’s most enduring monarchies.
The Benin Kingdom has continued to pursue the recovery of artefacts taken during the British invasion of Benin in 1897, with returned works regarded as important symbols of cultural identity and historical justice.
The President wished the monarch renewed strength, wisdom and good health as he marked both milestones.
He also expressed hope that the Oba’s reign would record further achievements in cultural preservation and social development, particularly in inspiring younger generations to appreciate and protect their heritage.
Tinubu concluded his message with the traditional Benin expression, “Oba gha t’o kpere. Ise!”
Oba Ewuare II ascended the throne on October 20, 2016, becoming the 40th Oba of Benin. His 10th coronation anniversary is being marked with cultural, sporting and traditional activities in Benin City, Edo State.
The celebrations highlight the enduring importance of the Benin monarchy in preserving the kingdom’s history, traditions and cultural identity.
