Nathaniel Bassey Becomes First African Gospel Artist to Surpass One Billion YouTube Views
Nigerian gospel singer and pastor Nathaniel Bassey has crossed one billion views on his official YouTube channel, becoming the first African gospel artist to reach the milestone.
Nigerian gospel singer and pastor Nathaniel Bassey has surpassed one billion views on YouTube, marking a major milestone in the growth of African gospel music on digital platforms.
Figures displayed on his official channel, Nathaniel Bassey Main, showed that it had accumulated more than 1.014 billion views and 5.24 million subscribers as of November 1, 2026.
The achievement makes Bassey the first African gospel artist reported to have crossed the one-billion-view mark on his official YouTube channel.
The milestone coincides with the October 2026 edition of the Hallelujah Challenge, an online prayer and worship programme founded by the minister in 2017.
The monthly initiative features midnight sessions of praise, worship and prayer, attracting participants from different parts of the world. Its livestreams and recorded sessions have contributed to the channel's growing audience.
The programme's popularity has expanded beyond its initial online gatherings, developing into an international Christian worship community with thousands participating in live sessions and millions accessing recorded editions.
Bassey is also known for gospel songs including Imela, Onise Iyanu, Olowogbogboro and You Are God, which have attracted audiences in Nigeria and beyond.
Despite the growing viewership of the Hallelujah Challenge, the singer has maintained that the programme is primarily intended for worship and spiritual devotion rather than commercial gain.
In November 2025, he explained that he would not monetise the channel's worship sessions because he had not received what he considered divine instruction to do so.
The achievement highlights the expanding international reach of Nigerian gospel music and the role of digital platforms in connecting religious music ministers with audiences across geographical boundaries.
