Tinubu Appoints 39-Year-Old Prof. Segun Aina as New JAMB Registrar
President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), marking a major leadership transition in Nigeria’s tertiary admissions system ahead of the expiration of Professor Ishaq Oloyede’s tenure on July 31, 2026.
The appointment was confirmed in a statement issued on Thursday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, Aina is a Professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, with strong expertise in digital infrastructure, national examination systems, and institutional reforms. He is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s youngest professors in the field.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent, an MSc in Internet Computing and Network Security, and a PhD in Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University, United Kingdom. He also completed the Senior Management Programme at Lagos Business School.
The Presidency stated that Aina has over 15 years of experience advising federal and state governments on digital transformation, systems design, and institutional reforms, particularly in education and public-sector modernization.
He has also served as a consultant to key examination bodies, including the National Examinations Council (NECO) and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), focusing on ICT systems and examination integrity.
The statement further noted that Aina is a member of several professional bodies, including the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
Tinubu expressed confidence that the incoming registrar would consolidate and expand on the reforms achieved under outgoing Registrar Ishaq Oloyede, particularly in the areas of transparency, digitalization, and examination credibility.
He tasked Aina with leveraging his technical and administrative experience to further strengthen JAMB as a critical institution in Nigeria’s education system.
The appointment is being viewed as part of the administration’s broader push toward technocratic leadership in key public institutions.
