State Police: FG Unveils Timeline for Submission of Bill to Tinubu

The Federal Government has disclosed that the proposed State Police Bill will be submitted to President Bola Tinubu before the end of 2026, following the conclusion of consultations and the harmonisation of recommendations from relevant stakeholders. The government said the move forms part of ongoing efforts to reform Nigeria's policing system and strengthen internal security.

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), said work on the proposed legislation had reached an advanced stage, with the Committee on the Creation of State Police currently reviewing submissions from state governments, security agencies and other stakeholders. He noted that the committee was expected to complete its assignment within the stipulated timeframe.

According to Fagbemi, once the review is concluded, the final draft of the bill will be forwarded to President Tinubu for consideration before it is transmitted to the National Assembly for legislative action. He said the government remains committed to ensuring that the proposed law adequately addresses concerns over funding, operational control, accountability and safeguards against abuse.

The minister explained that the proposed state police framework is designed to complement the existing Nigeria Police Force rather than replace it. He added that clear constitutional and legal provisions would be included to define the responsibilities of state police and prevent political interference in their operations.

The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to implementing security reforms capable of addressing the country's evolving security challenges, expressing optimism that the proposed legislation would strengthen policing, improve intelligence gathering and enhance the protection of lives and property across the federation.
