The Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria has called on relevant authorities to review the continued detention of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

The council, in a statement signed by its Secretary-General, Nafi’u Baba-Ahmad, expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding El-Rufai’s detention and the apparent difficulty in meeting his bail conditions.

It urged authorities to ensure that due process was followed throughout the handling of the former governor’s case.

The council said every Nigerian, regardless of status, political affiliation or personal disposition, was entitled to fundamental rights and presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court.

It stressed that while it did not support or condone criminality, the pursuit of justice must itself comply with established legal procedures and constitutional safeguards.

The SCSN warned that actions perceived as arbitrary or politically motivated could undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

It called on relevant authorities to operate strictly within the Constitution and extant laws, while urging all stakeholders to exercise restraint and responsibility.

The council said Nigeria’s unity and long-term stability depended partly on the credibility of its institutions and the confidence citizens placed in them.

It maintained that justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done, stressing the importance of consistent, impartial and lawful application of justice.

The council reiterated its commitment to advocating justice, protecting citizens’ rights and promoting peaceful coexistence across the country.
