SERAP Urges INEC to Publish Political Donation Limits, Party Finances
SERAP has urged INEC to disclose the limits it has prescribed for political contributions under the Electoral Act 2026 and publish details of how it will monitor campaign financing ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to publish the limits on political donations and disclose its mechanisms for monitoring campaign financing ahead of the 2027 elections.
SERAP made the call in a statement urging the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, to disclose whether the commission had exercised its statutory power under Section 91 of the Electoral Act 2026 to prescribe limits on political contributions.
The organisation also urged INEC to publish any applicable limits and communicate them widely to political parties, candidates, donors and the public.
SERAP called on the commission to disclose the systems, personnel and procedures it had established to monitor, investigate and enforce compliance with political contribution and campaign expenditure limits.
It also asked INEC to explain its methodology for monitoring political financing, including cash and in-kind donations, digital and social media financing, third-party expenditure and contributions made through intermediaries.
The organisation said greater transparency in political financing was necessary to strengthen accountability and prevent circumvention of campaign spending rules.
