Rivers State Ministry of Education Moves to Shut Down Unapproved Private Schools

In a decisive bid to clean up the private education sector and enforce statutory operating standards, the Rivers State Ministry of Education has announced the immediate commencement of a sweeping, statewide regulatory crackdown. Beginning Monday, June 15, specialized compliance teams backed by state security agencies will begin the systematic closure of all unapproved private primary and secondary schools operating within the state's boundaries. This drastic administrative measure comes after years of unchecked proliferation of low-cost, informal private schools, many of which operate out of residential apartments, abandoned warehouses, and unhygienic environments without formal registration, adequate facilities, or qualified teaching staff.

The state’s leadership has made it clear that the grace period for regularization has officially elapsed, emphasizing that the enforcement exercise will target both urban centres and rural communities. State authorities have warned landlords and community leaders against harboring these illegal institutions, noting that operating an unregistered educational facility constitutes a severe violation of regional child protection and educational standard acts. By clearing the ecosystem of substandard operators, the ministry aims to force a migration of pupils into fully approved, standard-compliant institutions, thereby safeguarding the quality of instruction and ensuring the physical security of school-age children across the state.
