Burkina Faso Thrash Flying Eagles 4-1, Knock Nigeria Out of U-20 AFCON, World Cup

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have failed to qualify for the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations after suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the final of the 2026 WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship.

The defeat also ended Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Azerbaijan.

The final was played on Sunday at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast, with Burkina Faso completing a double over Nigeria after defeating the Flying Eagles 2-0 in the group stage.

Nigeria suffered a disastrous start as the Young Stallions scored three goals within the opening 15 minutes, leaving Abdul Maikaba’s side with a mountain to climb.

The Flying Eagles managed to reduce the deficit with a second-half penalty but failed to build momentum for a comeback.

Burkina Faso eventually added a fourth goal late in the game to seal a convincing victory and claim the regional title.

The result means Burkina Faso and hosts Ghana will represent WAFU Zone B at next year’s U-20 AFCON.

Nigeria, seven-time African champions at the age-grade level, will therefore miss the continental tournament and the subsequent U-20 World Cup.

The defeat also ended the Flying Eagles’ hopes of retaining the WAFU Zone B title they won in Lomé in October 2024.

Burkina Faso have enjoyed a strong recent record against Nigeria, having also defeated the Flying Eagles 1-0 in the 2024 WAFU Zone B tournament and played out a 2-2 draw against them in Niger Republic in 2022.

Nigeria had entered the final hoping to avenge their earlier group-stage defeat, retain their regional crown and secure one of the zone’s two tickets to the 2027 U-20 AFCON.

Instead, Burkina Faso delivered another dominant performance to leave the Flying Eagles without a route to either the continental tournament or the global youth championship.
