Police Rescue 10 Passengers After Bandits Attack Commercial Bus on Kano Highway

The Kano State Police Command has rescued 10 passengers after suspected bandits attacked a commercial bus and abducted travellers along the Jos-Kano highway in Doguwa Local Government Area of the state.

The command disclosed the development in a statement issued on Monday by its Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna.

According to the statement, the attack occurred on July 26, 2026, at about 5:30 p.m. along the Falgore Forest axis between Gate Two Safer Highway and Dogo Dutse.

Haruna said the Divisional Police Officer of Doguwa Division received a distress call reporting that a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number BKK 6824 XA, travelling from Jos to Kano, had been intercepted by five armed bandits.

The suspects, armed with machetes and a firearm, reportedly blocked the highway, attacked the vehicle and abducted 13 of the 20 passengers on board.

Following the report, the DPO immediately mobilised tactical police operatives to the scene, where they confronted the attackers in a gun battle.

The police said the swift response forced the hoodlums to retreat, leading to the rescue of nine abducted passengers during the operation.

One additional male victim later escaped from captivity, bringing the total number of rescued passengers to 10.

However, three victims, comprising one man and two women, remain in captivity.

The rescued passengers were evacuated to Doguwa General Hospital, where they received medical attention. Police confirmed that they are in stable condition and undergoing treatment.

The command said additional tactical teams have been deployed while intelligence-led operations are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining captives and apprehend the fleeing suspects.

Haruna described the operation as evidence of the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to proactive policing, rapid emergency response and protecting lives and property through collaboration with local communities.

Commenting on the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, commended residents and road users for providing timely information that enabled security operatives to respond quickly.

He assured the public that the command remained committed to tackling criminal activities and safeguarding lives across Kano State.

The police added that investigations into the attack are ongoing and promised to provide further updates as rescue efforts continue.
