Police Officer Who Threatened to Kill Citizens Over Video Recording Arrested in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a police officer who was captured in a viral video threatening to kill anyone who recorded him while on duty.

The officer, identified as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Newton Isokpehi, was arrested following a prompt internal review of the video by the command.

In a statement issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Finance and Administration, Ngozi Ezeabata, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, the command said the officer’s conduct was “unbecoming of a member of the Nigeria Police Force.”

The statement noted that disciplinary proceedings had already been activated against the officer in line with the ethical standards and regulations of the Nigeria Police Force.

It added that as part of the investigation, the officer had been subjected to a drug test to help determine all circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure a transparent process.

The viral video showed the officer issuing threats, including a claim that he would kill anyone who attempted to film him while performing his duties, a remark that sparked widespread public outrage online.

The Commissioner of Police condemned the behaviour, stressing that the Nigeria Police Force remains a disciplined institution that will not tolerate misconduct, abuse of power, incitement, or any action capable of undermining public trust.

The command assured residents of Anambra State and Nigerians at large that the outcome of the disciplinary process would be made public, and that any officer found guilty would face appropriate sanctions according to the law.

It also reminded police personnel to remain professional, emotionally balanced, and respectful in the discharge of their duties, especially in an era of increased public scrutiny and citizen documentation of police activities.
