Police Launch Investigation into Killing of Catholic Priest in Kogi

The Kogi State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the killing of a Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Samuel Oyetoro, whose lifeless body was discovered along Church Road in Ajaokuta Local Government Area. The incident has thrown the Catholic community and residents of the state into mourning as authorities intensify efforts to identify and arrest those responsible.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Oyiza Afusat, the command received a report on the morning of July 29 that the body of an unidentified man had been found by the roadside. Police operatives who responded to the scene discovered that the victim had sustained severe machete wounds to the head. The body was evacuated to the Ajaokuta Steel Company Hospital, where a medical doctor confirmed him dead before it was deposited at the mortuary for an autopsy.

The deceased was later identified as Rev. Fr. Samuel Oyetoro, a priest serving at St. Paul's Parish, Ayetoro Gbede, in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State. Originally from Egbe in Yagba West Local Government Area, he was widely known for his pastoral work and service within the Catholic Church.

The police said preliminary investigations are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the killing. The command added that once initial inquiries are completed, the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation, while efforts continue to track down those behind the attack.

The tragic incident has sparked grief among parishioners, religious leaders and residents, with many calling for a thorough investigation and swift justice. It also adds to growing concerns over violent crimes in parts of the country and renewed appeals for stronger security measures to protect lives and property
