Plateau: Heroic Firefighter Enters Diesel Tanker to Rescue Trapped Man

A Federal Fire Service firefighter in Plateau State has been praised for his extraordinary bravery after risking his own life to rescue a man trapped inside a diesel tanker during an emergency operation.

The daring rescue was confirmed by the Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service, Engr. Adeyemi Samuel Olumode, who disclosed that the firefighter sustained injuries during the operation and was later admitted to hospital for treatment.

According to Olumode, the firefighter entered the confined interior of the diesel tanker despite the significant dangers associated with the operation. His courageous action, however, resulted in the successful rescue of the trapped victim.

The Controller-General shared details of the incident in Abuja while commissioning newly constructed Quarter Guards at the Federal Fire Service headquarters and the Wuse Zonal Fire Station.

He described the rescue as a clear demonstration of the commitment, courage and selflessness displayed daily by firefighters across the country.

Olumode noted that the firefighter’s willingness to place himself in danger to save another life reflected the high level of dedication within the Service.

He also attributed the improved morale among firefighters to enhanced welfare initiatives introduced under his administration.

According to him, operational challenges previously caused by inadequate water supply and diesel have been addressed, allowing personnel to respond more effectively to emergencies.

“There is nothing like ‘no water’ or ‘no diesel’ anymore,” he said, stressing that the Service is now better equipped to carry out its responsibilities.

The Controller-General also recalled that shortly after assuming office, he cancelled a planned reception in his honour and redirected the funds toward purchasing mattresses and other essential items for firefighters nationwide.

He explained that the decision significantly improved staff welfare and strengthened their commitment to duty.

Olumode described the newly commissioned Quarter Guards as symbols of discipline, unity and trust between the leadership and personnel of the Service.

He further directed the Chairman of the Controller-General’s Awards Committee, Deputy Controller-General M.A. Tambari, to document outstanding staff initiatives across the country for official recognition.

Speaking at the ceremony, Assistant Controller-General in charge of Inspection, Investigation and Enforcement, Bolarinde Tajudeen Muhammed, commended Olumode’s leadership style, noting that it had created a more supportive working environment for officers.

Also speaking, Superintendent of Fire and Head of Enforcement, Murtala Muhammed, highlighted several welfare programmes introduced under the current administration, including medical intervention for sick personnel, financial support for bereaved families, free ambulance services for transporting deceased officers and expanded interest-free loan facilities.

He said these initiatives motivated firefighters to voluntarily contribute towards the construction of the Quarter Guards while strengthening their commitment to protecting lives and property across Nigeria.
