Oyo, Borno Abductions Dampened Democracy Day Mood — Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu said the abduction of schoolchildren in Oyo and Borno states overshadowed Democracy Day celebrations, reaffirming government’s commitment to security reforms and rescue operations nationwide.
President Bola Tinubu has said that the 2026 Democracy Day celebrations were overshadowed by the continued abduction of schoolchildren in Oyo and Borno states, describing the situation as a painful reminder of Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges.
Speaking during his national address marking 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, Tinubu noted that while Nigeria continues to make progress in governance and development, insecurity remains a major concern that demands urgent and sustained attention.
“Though this year’s mood is dampened by the abduction of our children in Oyo and Borno, we remain hopeful for their safe return,” the President said.
He stressed that democracy cannot thrive in an atmosphere of fear and insecurity, warning that protecting citizens remains the foundation of national stability and progress. According to him, his administration has taken decisive steps to address the security situation across the country.
“Democracy without security is a mirage. That is why this administration declared a security emergency and approved the recruitment of more than 50,000 new police officers and thousands of military recruits,” Tinubu stated.
The President explained that the government is strengthening security institutions, increasing manpower, and expanding operational capacity to respond more effectively to threats posed by banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping.
Tinubu also used the occasion to commend members of the armed forces, police, and intelligence services for their sacrifices in defending the country. He acknowledged their efforts in combating insecurity across multiple regions and urged Nigerians to continue supporting them.
“To our armed forces, police, and intelligence services: Nigeria salutes your sacrifice,” he said.
He further appreciated traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community heads for their role in promoting peace and reconciliation at the grassroots level, noting that government alone cannot solve the country’s security challenges.
“To our traditional rulers, faith leaders, and community heads: thank you for your support of peace and reconciliation. The government cannot do it alone,” the President added.
Tinubu assured Nigerians that efforts are ongoing to secure the release of abducted schoolchildren and restore normalcy in affected communities. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property while strengthening national unity and democratic stability.
