Outrage as Video Shows Lagos Police Commissioner at City Boy Movement Event

A video showing the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, attending the inauguration of the Lagos State Executive Committee of the City Boy Movement has sparked widespread criticism on social media, with opposition figures and members of the public questioning the political neutrality of the Nigeria Police Force ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The viral footage shows the police commissioner arriving at the event in Ikeja, exchanging greetings with dignitaries and interacting with participants, some of whom were wearing caps bearing President Bola Tinubu's campaign logo and the initials "ST", widely associated with Seyi Tinubu. The master of ceremonies also publicly acknowledged the commissioner's presence during the gathering.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), an opposition party, condemned the commissioner's attendance, arguing that it created the impression of partisanship at a time when the police are expected to remain impartial. The party called on the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force to suspend and sanction CP Fatai, while demanding assurances that security agencies would remain neutral during the 2027 elections.

The incident also generated widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the appropriateness of a serving police commissioner attending an event organised by a group aligned with the ruling APC. Some commentators questioned whether similar participation would be extended to events organised by opposition groups, while others argued that the appearance could undermine public confidence in the police's neutrality.

As of the time of reporting, the Lagos State Police Command had not issued an official response to the controversy. The incident has fuelled renewed debate over the role of security agencies during election periods and the importance of maintaining public confidence in the impartiality of state institutions.
