Osun Guber: Accord Asks EU to Monitor Situation, Claims 29 Deaths

The Accord Party has appealed to the European Union (EU) to intervene in the political crisis in Osun State ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.

In a letter dated August 12, 2026, and addressed to Gautier Mignot, head of the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, the party alleged that the political atmosphere in the state had deteriorated, with reports of violence, arrests, intimidation and harassment of political actors and supporters.

Accord National Chairman Maxwell Mgbudem claimed that at least 29 people had been killed and several others injured in incidents allegedly connected to the political situation in the state.

He also alleged that more than 60 Accord members and supporters had been arrested and detained in Abuja and Nasarawa State.

Mgbudem expressed concern over what he described as the selective use of federal law-enforcement and regulatory institutions during the election period.

He, however, clarified that the party was not seeking to obstruct legitimate investigations or lawful enforcement actions.

The party chairman argued that the timing and perceived selectivity of actions by public institutions could undermine public confidence in the electoral process if they were not demonstrably impartial, transparent and consistent with due process.

Mgbudem further alleged that Accord members had been subjected to attacks, harassment and intimidation. He cited a viral video in which Senator Francis Fadahunsi allegedly called for Accord members to be killed wherever they were found.

He urged the EU to use its diplomatic influence to encourage Nigerian authorities to de-escalate tensions and ensure a level playing field for all political parties.

The party also called on the EU to publicly support a free, fair, transparent and peaceful election, with the outcome determined solely by the votes of the electorate.

Accord said any international intervention should focus on preventive diplomacy, arguing that early engagement could help prevent further escalation of tensions.

Mgbudem maintained that timely intervention by the EU could reinforce the message that political competition must remain peaceful, democratic and respectful of the rule of law.
