Opposition MPs Accuse Tinubu Of Prioritising 2027 Over Raging National Crises
Opposition lawmakers have accused President Bola Tinubu of prioritising his 2027 re-election bid over tackling raging national crises like insecurity and economic hardship, urging the government to refocus on governance and the welfare of Nigerians.
Opposition members of the National Assembly have accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of prioritising his 2027 re-election ambition over addressing the pressing national crises confronting the country.
The lawmakers, drawn from various opposition parties, expressed concern that the renewed political activities and permutations geared towards the 2027 general elections appear to be taking precedence over urgent national issues such as insecurity, economic hardship, and the rising cost of living.
They argued that the attention and energy being channelled into political alignments and re-election strategies should instead be directed towards finding lasting solutions to the multiple challenges facing millions of Nigerians.
According to the opposition lawmakers, Nigerians are currently grappling with severe economic difficulties, worsening insecurity, food inflation, and other hardships that require the urgent and undivided attention of the government.
They maintained that the welfare and security of citizens should remain the topmost priority of any responsible government, rather than premature politicking ahead of an election that is still some years away.
"It is unfortunate that at a time when Nigerians are suffering, the focus appears to be on 2027 and political survival. The government should be more concerned about the welfare and security of the people," one of the lawmakers stated.
The lawmakers called on the President and his administration to refocus their attention on governance and the delivery of dividends of democracy to Nigerians, rather than getting carried away by early electioneering.
They stressed that good governance, effective policies, and tangible improvements in the lives of citizens should be the basis for any administration seeking re-election, rather than political manoeuvring and alliance-building.
The opposition further urged the government to take decisive action to address the worsening security situation in various parts of the country, as well as the economic hardship that has continued to bite harder across the nation.
The accusation has continued to generate reactions across the political divide, with supporters of the government likely to dismiss the claims as the usual rhetoric of the opposition, while critics may align with the lawmakers' position.
However, supporters of the President are expected to argue that the administration has continued to roll out policies and initiatives aimed at addressing insecurity, stabilising the economy, and improving the welfare of citizens.
The development underscores the deepening political tension in the country as the 2027 general elections gradually take centre stage in national discourse, with various political actors and groups intensifying their preparations.
Political observers note that the coming months are likely to witness increased political activities and exchanges as parties and politicians position themselves ahead of the keenly anticipated 2027 polls.
As reactions continue to trail the development, calls have intensified for the government to strike a balance between politics and governance, while keeping the welfare and security of Nigerians as its foremost priority.
