OPay Seeks DSS, Police Probe Over Shutdown Rumour

Fintech company OPay has called for an investigation into a false online claim that it was shutting down its operations in Nigeria.

OPay’s Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Rokosu, said the company was cooperating with the Department of State Services and Nigeria Police Force in investigating the source of the information.

Rokosu said OPay had provided evidence to help law enforcement agencies identify those responsible for creating and circulating the claim.

He described the information as harmful and said the company would take legal action against those responsible.

OPay’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technical Officer, Dotun Adekunle, assured customers that the company remained fully operational and had no plan to leave the Nigerian market.

“OPay is here, OPay is operating, and OPay is going nowhere,” Adekunle said.

He said the viral message, which claimed OPay would suspend its operations from September 1, was false and did not originate from the company.

Adekunle urged customers not to make financial decisions based on unverified messages shared on social media or messaging platforms.

The false notice had advised OPay customers to withdraw their funds, claiming they could lose access to their accounts following the alleged shutdown.

OPay had earlier dismissed the notice as false and advised customers to rely on its official communication channels for accurate information.

The company also requested an X user who circulated the claim to retract the post and apologise. The user subsequently deleted the post and apologised.

OPay said it would continue to pursue legal action against individuals responsible for deliberately spreading false information about its operations.
