“Only Fools Believe I’m Working for Tinubu” — Kwankwaso Rejects 2027 Alliance Rumours
Former Kano State governor and National Democratic Congress (NDC) leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has dismissed claims that he is secretly working for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election, insisting that he remains committed to his party and its vision for Nigeria.
Kwankwaso made the statement during an interview with Global TV, where he criticised those behind the rumours, describing them as people who lack proper understanding of politics and political relationships.
According to him, “Only fools will believe that we are working for Tinubu. My supporters and I are working for the NDC and for what we believe will benefit Nigerians.”
The former presidential candidate explained that although he has maintained a long-standing personal relationship with Tinubu over the years, such a relationship should not be interpreted as political loyalty or partnership. He stressed that both men belong to different political camps and pursue different political ideologies.
Kwankwaso stated that political maturity allows individuals from opposing camps to maintain cordial personal relationships without necessarily sharing the same agenda or ambitions.
He also accused some close associates of President Tinubu of allegedly shielding the president from the realities facing ordinary Nigerians. According to him, several aides around the president are more focused on persuading governors, lawmakers and other influential politicians to defect to the APC instead of concentrating on Nigeria’s worsening economic hardship and security concerns.
The NDC leader further spoke about his alliance with former Anambra State governor Peter Obi in the emerging opposition coalition ahead of the next general election.
Kwankwaso said the decision to align with Obi came after wide consultations and careful political calculations among stakeholders within the coalition. He noted that they eventually considered Obi the most suitable candidate from southern Nigeria capable of leading the movement.
He added that the coalition still has enough time before the 2027 elections to engage Nigerians, clarify misconceptions and counter rumours being spread against them, while focusing on offering credible leadership and an alternative solution to Nigeria’s current challenges.
