Omokri Faults Davido, Says Publicity On Abducted Oyo Pupils Helps Terrorists

Nigeria’s Ambassador-Designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri has criticised Afrobeats star Davido over his public advocacy for abducted schoolchildren in Oyo State, arguing that global publicity on terrorism cases can strengthen abductors rather than pressure them.

The controversy follows Davido’s appearance at the FIFA World Cup countdown concert, where he used a customised outfit to draw attention to pupils and teachers abducted in Ahoro-Esinle and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area.

The singer wore a jacket and shirt displaying the names of victims, with markings indicating those still in captivity and those confirmed dead, in what he described as a call for urgent action.

In a detailed statement posted on X, Omokri argued that publicising such incidents does not weaken terrorist groups but instead gives them attention they seek.

“Publicity Helps Terrorists. It Does Not Pressure Them. They Treasure it!” he stated.

He further claimed that armed groups benefit from global attention, insisting that visibility increases their leverage and influence during negotiations.

Omokri referenced former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s famous remark that “Publicity is the oxygen of terrorism,” arguing that terror groups thrive on attention and fear.

He added that excessive publicity can shift pressure away from attackers and complicate rescue efforts, making victims more valuable as bargaining tools.

According to him, increased global awareness of hostage cases may unintentionally encourage abductors to tighten security around victims.

He also cited past advocacy efforts, including international campaigns related to abducted schoolgirls, arguing that heightened attention sometimes made rescue operations more difficult.

“If #BringBackOurGirls had not been made such a global phenomenon, their abductors would not have increased security around the girls,” he said.

Omokri maintained that security agencies are still actively working to secure the release of abducted pupils and teachers in Oyo State, stressing that ongoing efforts have previously led to successful recoveries.

“This is not to say the Nigerian government is resting on its oars… every effort is being made to secure the release of the children and their teachers,” he added.
