Former Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, has officially defected from the All Progressives Congress to the National Democratic Congress, deepening political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement released Thursday through his media adviser, Sunday Areh, in Warri, Delta State, Omo-Agege confirmed that he would contest for the Delta Central Senatorial seat on the NDC platform and support the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

The former lawmaker said his decision came after weeks of consultations with political associates, supporters, and stakeholders, whom he said demanded leadership built on integrity, listening to the people, and delivering results.

Omo-Agege also thanked prominent NDC figures who engaged him during the process, including Seriake Dickson, NDC National Chairman Cleopas Moses, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

He described the NDC as a party founded on inclusion, accountability, grassroots participation, and true federalism, adding that it offered the clearest platform for advancing the interests of Delta State and Nigeria.

Declaring his senatorial ambition, Omo-Agege said calls from constituents for his return to the Senate influenced his decision. He maintained that the move was about fulfilling the mandate of the people rather than personal ambition.

The former deputy senate president further criticized governance failures in Delta State despite huge federal allocations, citing poor roads, struggling healthcare centres, overcrowded schools, unemployment, and harsh conditions for businesses.

His defection is expected to reshape Delta political dynamics and strengthen ongoing coalition efforts among opposition figures preparing for the 2027 elections.
