NSIB Probes Bonny Anchorage Vessel Collision

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has launched an investigation into the collision between container vessel MV Maersk Valparaiso and oil tanker MT Lady Martina at Bonny Anchorage in Rivers State.

The incident, which occurred on May 20, 2026, has been classified as a “Very Serious Marine Casualty” by the bureau.

In a statement, NSIB said it activated its marine occurrence response protocols immediately after receiving notification of the collision.

An investigation team was deployed to Onne and Bonny on May 22 to carry out evidence preservation and preliminary investigative work.

The bureau said the team boarded both vessels, interviewed key crew members, and collected operational records and navigational data relevant to the incident.

It also confirmed that data from the Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) and Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) of MV Maersk Valparaiso had been successfully retrieved for forensic analysis.

In line with International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards, the NSIB said it had notified the Transport Safety Investigation Bureau (TSIB) of Singapore as a substantially interested party.

The agency said it is working with both local and international stakeholders to ensure a thorough and independent investigation.

NSIB stressed that the objective is to determine the cause of the collision and improve maritime safety standards.

It cautioned against speculation, warning that conclusions cannot be drawn until the investigation is completed.

The bureau added that urgent safety recommendations would be issued if necessary, while the final report will be published after the investigation concludes.
