Nigerians, Ghanaians Celebrate South Africa’s World Cup Defeat

Football fans from Nigeria and Ghana took to social media to celebrate South Africa’s 2-0 loss to Mexico in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday.

The result sparked widespread reactions across West Africa, with many supporters posting humorous comments, memes and messages following Bafana Bafana’s disappointing start to the tournament.

South Africa entered the competition hoping to make a positive statement on the global stage, but Mexico proved too strong in front of a passionate home crowd at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

The co-hosts seized control of the contest early when Julián Quiñones scored the opening goal of the tournament in the ninth minute. The striker capitalised on a defensive mistake and fired a low shot beyond South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to give Mexico the lead.

Mexico continued to dominate possession and create chances, while South Africa struggled to settle into the game. The African side’s task became even more difficult shortly after halftime when midfielder Yaya Sithole was shown a red card in the 49th minute.

Reduced to 10 men, South Africa found it increasingly difficult to contain the Mexican attack. Their resistance was eventually broken again in the 66th minute when veteran striker Raúl Jiménez headed home from close range after a well-worked move.

The match became increasingly heated as frustrations grew among the South African players. Themba Zwane was later sent off after a VAR review for striking an opponent, leaving Bafana Bafana with nine men.

Mexico also finished the game with 10 players after defender César Montes received a late red card for a reckless challenge.

Following the final whistle, social media platforms were flooded with reactions from Nigerian and Ghanaian football fans, many of whom celebrated the result due to long-standing sporting rivalries within African football.

While some supporters praised Mexico’s performance, others focused on South Africa’s disciplinary problems and inability to cope with the pressure of the occasion.

The defeat leaves South Africa with work to do in Group A as they prepare for their next match, while Mexico move to the top of the standings and strengthen their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.
