National Identification Authority issues five million Ghana Cards in 2024
The National Identification Authority says it issued 5.2 million Ghana Cards last year, surpassing its annual target as the biometric identity programme expands to rural areas.
The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced it issued 5.2 million Ghana Cards in 2024, surpassing its annual target of five million as the agency intensified outreach to rural and peri-urban communities.
Executive Secretary Professor Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah said the achievement reflected concerted efforts to bring identification services closer to citizens, particularly in the Northern and Upper regions.
"Identity is the foundation of all public services. Every Ghanaian who obtains a Ghana Card gains access to banking, healthcare, social protection and government services," Prof. Attafuah said.
The NIA is targeting universal registration of all Ghanaians aged 15 and above by 2027.
