New Army Division Will Strengthen Response to Security Threats, Says Benue Governor
Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has praised the establishment of the Nigerian Army's 5 Division Headquarters in Makurdi, saying it will strengthen the military's response to security threats across Benue and neighbouring states. He also welcomed the Army's expansion and recruitment drive as important steps towards improving national security.
Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has welcomed President Bola Tinubu's approval for the establishment of the Nigerian Army's 5 Division Headquarters in Makurdi, describing the development as a major boost to security efforts in Benue and neighbouring North-Central states. He said the new military formation would improve operational coordination and enable security agencies to respond more swiftly to emerging threats.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, Governor Alia said the new division would enhance command and control while strengthening the protection of lives and property across Benue, Nasarawa and Kogi states. He noted that the decision reflects the Federal Government's commitment to tackling insecurity through a stronger and more effective military presence.
The governor also commended President Tinubu for approving the expansion of the Nigerian Army from eight to 12 divisions and authorising the recruitment of an additional 28,000 personnel. According to him, the reforms will significantly improve the Armed Forces' operational capacity and support ongoing efforts to combat terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security challenges.
Alia expressed appreciation to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, for his leadership in implementing the military restructuring. He said the establishment of the Makurdi division demonstrates a strategic approach to addressing the persistent security concerns affecting the North-Central region and reaffirmed his administration's commitment to working closely with security agencies.
The governor expressed optimism that the new division would help restore peace in affected communities and create a more secure environment for residents. He urged citizens to continue supporting security agencies with credible information to enhance ongoing operations and improve public safety.
