NDLEA Blames Rising Clubhouses for Drug Abuse in Kwara Community

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has raised concerns over the increasing number of clubhouses in Lafiagi, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, blaming the trend for the growing rate of drug abuse among youths in the community. The agency warned that many of the establishments have become centres for the consumption and distribution of illicit substances.

Speaking during a stakeholders' engagement, NDLEA officials said the proliferation of recreational centres operating without proper regulation has contributed to the widespread abuse of hard drugs, particularly among young people. The agency noted that the situation poses a serious threat to public health, security and social development.

The agency called on traditional rulers, community leaders, parents and security agencies to work together in tackling the menace, stressing that the fight against drug abuse requires collective action. It urged owners of entertainment centres to ensure their premises are not used for illegal drug-related activities.

NDLEA also reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying enforcement operations, public awareness campaigns and community-based interventions aimed at reducing drug demand and preventing substance abuse among vulnerable groups. It warned that anyone found dealing in or facilitating the use of illicit drugs would face the full weight of the law.

Residents were encouraged to provide credible information on drug trafficking and abuse to security agencies, with the NDLEA assuring the public that all reports would be treated confidentially as part of efforts to restore sanity to the community.
