NDLEA Arrests 101-Year-Old Woman, Intercepts Cocaine Hidden in Fufu
The NDLEA has arrested 101-year-old Esther Ogunmabo in Ogun State for allegedly selling cannabis. The agency also intercepted 20 grammes of cocaine concealed inside a wrap of fufu aboard a boat heading to Cameroon.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested a 101-year-old woman, Esther Ogunmabo, for allegedly dealing in cannabis in Ogun State.
The NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.
Babafemi said Ogunmabo was arrested on Aug. 15 in Ilisan, Ogun, with 90 grammes of skunk, a strain of cannabis, packaged in retail sachets.
He said the centenarian told operatives that she began selling the illicit substance after her provisions shop was destroyed by fire.
According to him, Ogunmabo said one of her daughters based in Lagos supplied the cannabis to her every four days, which she sold in small quantities to local customers.
NDLEA Chairman, Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), directed that the woman be granted bail and placed on counselling because of her advanced age.
Her daughter was, however, arrested in connection with the case.
In a related operation in Akwa Ibom, NDLEA operatives intercepted a wooden boat on Aug. 21 allegedly conveying illicit drugs to fishing settlements in Cameroon.
Three suspects were arrested aboard the vessel, with a combined 42.622kg of narcotics recovered.
Babafemi said 20 grammes of cocaine was found cleverly concealed inside a large wrap of edible cassava fufu, alongside 435 grammes of skunk, from one of the suspects.
