Makinde-Backed PDP Set to Screen Over 3,000 Aspirants Amid Deepening Party Crisis

The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) backed by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has announced plans to screen more than 3,000 aspirants ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to the party, a total of 3,181 aspirants are expected to participate in the screening exercise for various elective positions across the country. The figures include 2,122 aspirants for State Houses of Assembly, 748 for the House of Representatives, 198 senatorial aspirants, 112 governorship aspirants, and one presidential aspirant.

The party disclosed this in a statement announcing the constitution of screening committees and appeal panels in line with its timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 elections. The exercise is scheduled to take place nationwide on May 19, 2026.

The development comes amid an ongoing leadership crisis within the PDP, with the Makinde-backed faction and another group aligned with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike continuing to disagree over party leadership and preparations for the 2027 elections.

Reports indicate that the Makinde-backed camp has moved ahead with its own timetable, sale of nomination forms, and internal election preparations despite objections from the rival faction, which described some of the moves as unauthorized.

Political analysts say the large number of aspirants reflects growing political activity within the PDP as politicians position themselves ahead of the next election cycle. Observers also note that the screening exercise may further intensify the internal power struggle currently affecting the opposition party.
