Loss Of Over 200 Amotekun Corps Unacceptable, Oyo APC Tells Makinde

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has described the reported loss of more than 200 members of the Western Nigeria Security Network, known as Amotekun Corps, as saddening, alarming and unacceptable.

The party made the claim in a statement issued in Ibadan by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, calling for clarity on the circumstances surrounding the reported deaths and stronger protection for security personnel in the state.

According to the APC, Governor Seyi Makinde should provide detailed information on the incident and ensure proper welfare and safety measures for corps members and affected families.

The controversy stems from remarks made by Makinde during a sympathy visit to Oriire Local Government Area following a deadly attack on May 15, 2026, in which bandits killed residents and abducted schoolchildren and teachers.

During the visit, the governor reportedly stated that over 200 Amotekun personnel had lost their lives in active service recently, without giving full details of the circumstances surrounding the fatalities.

Reacting, the APC said the governor’s disclosure was made “with flippancy” and lacked sensitivity toward the families of deceased operatives, arguing that such a figure requires transparency and accountability.

The party further alleged that the situation reflects rising insecurity in the state and questioned the effectiveness of current security coordination strategies.

It also called for improved collaboration between Amotekun Corps and federal security agencies, insisting that poor synergy and leadership gaps may be affecting operational outcomes.

The statement criticised the alleged deployment of Amotekun personnel to private properties, claiming such practices expose operatives to unnecessary risks and reduce effectiveness in combating crime.

APC urged the state government to strengthen recruitment standards, improve training, and provide better welfare packages to ensure operatives are motivated and adequately protected in the line of duty.

The party maintained that addressing insecurity in Oyo State requires professionalism, coordination, and proper resource allocation across all security structures operating in the state.
