Lagos Arrests, Prosecutes 859 Traffic Offenders
The Lagos State Government has announced that a total of 859 traffic offenders have been arrested and prosecuted across key commercial districts, including Lagos Island and Ikeja, as part of ongoing efforts to enforce traffic laws and improve order on the state’s roads.
The disclosure was made on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Central Business Districts, Bola Olumegbon Lawal, during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing marking the third anniversary of the administration’s second term.
According to Lawal, the arrests covered a wide range of traffic violations, including illegal parking, driving against traffic (one-way driving), unlawful U-turns, and disobedience of traffic light signals. She added that 24 tricycles were also impounded and prosecuted for similar offences within the enforcement period.
She explained that the Central Business Districts’ enforcement teams have continued to intensify operations aimed at improving traffic flow, enhancing safety, and creating a more conducive environment for business activities, commuters, residents, and visitors across Lagos State.
Lawal, however, noted that enforcement has not been without challenges. She revealed that officers of the agency have, on several occasions, faced attacks from suspected hoodlums and individuals allegedly linked to the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) while carrying out their duties.
Despite these challenges, she said the agency has remained committed to sustaining enforcement activities through continuous training and retraining of personnel, alongside safety awareness campaigns and rescue operations within the Central Business Districts.
She stressed that the government remains determined to strengthen discipline on Lagos roads, especially in high-traffic commercial areas where violations are more frequent and disruptive to economic activities.
Lawal reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to enforcing traffic regulations, maintaining public order, and improving the overall quality of life in Lagos State.
She added that the state government will continue to deploy necessary resources and strategies to ensure compliance with traffic laws while also protecting the safety of enforcement officers and road users across the state.
