Lagos 2027: APC Unveils Hamzat’s Running Mate
Lagos APC has unveiled Damilola Sonayon-James as running mate to Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat for the 2027 governorship election, citing competence, grassroots support and party loyalty in the selection process.
The All Progressives Congress in Lagos State has unveiled Damilola Sonayon-James as the running mate to its 2027 governorship candidate, Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat.
The announcement was made during a party event where Lagos State APC leadership formally presented her as the deputy governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sonayon-James, who currently serves as the State Deputy Woman Leader of the party, was selected following what party officials described as extensive consultations and a rigorous screening process.
The Lagos State Chairman of the APC and Chairman of the Forum of 36 APC State Chairmen, Cornelius Ojelabi, said her emergence reflected the party’s commitment to inclusiveness and merit-based selection.
He explained that the decision was guided by considerations such as competence, leadership capacity, grassroots acceptance, loyalty to the party, and the ability to contribute to Lagos State’s continued development.
Ojelabi added that the party remains focused on strengthening its internal structures while ensuring that qualified individuals are given opportunities to serve in leadership positions.
He also expressed confidence that the ticket would consolidate the party’s dominance in Lagos politics while promoting continuity in governance and development projects.
Party stakeholders present at the unveiling described the selection as strategic, noting that it reflects efforts to balance experience with youth and gender representation within the APC structure in the state.
The 2027 Lagos governorship race is expected to be closely watched, given the state’s political significance as Nigeria’s economic hub and its history of competitive electoral contests.
